Reflections as a Lite AdSense User

Google is the leading search engine, a savvy company that any Internet user can benefit from understanding. In this article, I focus mainly on the Google AdSense program. There are other Pay Per Click programs, but I have no direct experience with them.

First, it's helpful to understand the different parts: Google AdWords is the program that advertisers use to place their ads, such as the ones you see in the far left column. Advertisers pay based on the number of clicks multiplied by the cost per click and a rate that is calculated in the secret rooms of Google. The acronyms that have formed are PPC (Pay Per Click), CPC (Cost Per Click), and CTR (Click Through Rate).

The other side of the equation is the web site publisher. This program is called AdSense, divided into AdSense for Content and Google Search. Google pays you, after taking a reasonable percentage, for using your Internet real estate to show the ads of the AdWords advertisers. The Google master computer reads the content on the web page and delivers ads that it has determined are relevant for that page (it takes about 24 hours for Google to post relevant ads when you first enroll, especially for a new web site). Google Search allows you to search the Web, your own web site, and 1-2 other specific domains.

You might find yourself interested in both sides of the equation as an AdWords advertiser and an AdSense publisher. You can be up and running with either program in minutes; however, if you jump into the AdWords program, you'll want to be cetain that you set your daily maximum to be no more that you're really willing to pay. Most people spend many months tweaking their ads, split testing, and changing directions.

If you want people visiting your site, you'll find it very helpful to know enough about Google's view of the world, or rather, Google's view of the World Wide Web. You may have another favorite search engine, but right now Google dominates and leads. You don't need to be an expert, but it's helpful to be conversant enough to hire the types of expertise you need or decide you don;t want to play the Google game.

I use AdSense for Content at this web site and at my blogs for a variety of reasons: to provide you additional resources (most of these AdSense advertisers I would have no other way to bring you), text links are generally more trusted than banners, and AdSense generates a modest stream of income. However, I've chosen not to use Adsense for Content at my main company Web Site, Marshall House, or at the Voice of Jeanie Marshall because those web sites are about my services and products.

You must receive a lot of traffic (visitors) to generate much income from AdSense for Content, mainly because those little ads are so prevalent that less clicking happens at any one site. Also consider that when you finally have someone at your company site, do you want to lose the visitor to make 12¢ or even $2.00?

In the AdSense program, I consider that it's Google Search that is the more vlaue-added feature for a web site. Quite honestly, I find it hard to imagine putting up a web site these days without a search feature! Google is the leading search engine. It's free and only takes minutes to add the code for anyone who knows how to cut and paste. If you have a web site, I suggest you put installing Google Search at the top of your to-do list.

As you can see, I use both Google Search and Adsense for Content on the left navigation bar. Generally I earn more from the Google Search than the Adsense for Content. If you have a website that's essentially a brochure of your offerings as a coach, I truly recommend you not use Adsense for Content. The Google Search feature, though, will make virtually any site more user friendly and appealing. Visit the Google Adsense Program.
